September 99 International Space Weather Campaign -- Call for Participation -- sign up form

 Purpose:

To study a space weather event from its initiation at the sun to its impacts at the Earth including effects on space-based and ground-based worldwide assets and assessment of the accuracy of forecasting techniques. Special features of this campaign are:

  • Broad international cooperation
  • As complete as possible space-based and ground-based observations of the event.
  • Encouraging involvement of the user communities both in the planning and execution of the campaign.
  • Encouraging participation of the forecasting community

 Who:

  • The worldwide space science community
  • Users whose systems are impacted by space weather conditions
  • Space weather forecasters

Role of SCOSTEP/ S-RAMP:

Coordination of the campaign will be undertaken by SCOSTEP/SRAMP.

  • Prior to the campaign, lists of participants and contact information will be compiled to facilitate collaborations.
  • Will act as a collection site or clearinghouse for information from the campaign interval, housing datasets and/or linking to data bases from the campaign interval.

When:

  • We are in the process of negotiating three floating incoherent scatter radar world days during the month of September 1999. 1999 International Geophysical Calendar. Watch this site for further details.
  • Campaign days will be selected on the basis of geoeffective solar activity.
  • The month of the campaign was switched recently from October 1999 to September 1999. This was done to maximize overlap with the POLAR spacecraft observations which provide a crucial global perspective for the campaign. During October 1999, POLAR performs a flip maneuver resulting in the loss of observations for from ~2-4 weeks depending on the instrument involved. A switch of the campaign to November 1999 was not possible due to the involvement of the Incoherent Scatter Radars in observing the Leonids meteor shower.

 To Participate:

  • Send comments or sign up to participate in the campaign (sign-up form) so that an up-to-date list of participants can be constructed and plans for collaborations can begin among the participants.
  • Give some indication of the type of measurement or modeling in which you are involved.
  • Indicate whether your observations will be confined to the 3-day campaign interval or if they will extend over some longer period during September 1999
  • Provide contact information (address, email, phone, fax).
